Touchpad use and settings

Your Surface Typing Cover has a touchpad with two buttons that you can use like a mouse. Use touchpad gestures to do common tasks. Learn how to adjust touchpad settings for things like changing scroll direction or preventing the touchpad from responding to accidental touches.

Surface touchpad

If your Surface device is equipped with a touchpad, it has right-click and left-click buttons that work like the buttons on a mouse.

Press the button firmly to click. A quick tap is interpreted as a touchpad gesture. To learn more about gestures, see Try the latest touchpad gestures.

Touchpad gestures

Here are some of the gestures you can use on your touchpad. Except as noted, these gestures work with all Surface Typing Covers and the Surface Book keyboard.

Using touchpad buttons on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Left touchpad button.*
    • Press to click
    Right touchpad button.
    • Press to right-click
  • Left touchpad button.
    • Selects an item
    • Like left-click on a mouse
    Right touchpad button.
    • Opens app commands in Windows apps or a context menu in desktop apps
    • Like right-click on a mouse

Two-finger tap on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Tap two fingers anywhere on the touchpad
  • Opens app commands in Windows apps or a context menu in desktop apps
  • Like right-click on a mouse

Drag gesture on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Drag your finger on the touchpad
  • Moves the cursor
  • Like moving a mouse

Swipe 3 fingers up on touchpad

  • Swipe three fingers up on the touchpad
  • Displays your virtual desktops
  • Like swiping in from the right side of the screen

Left-click and drag gesture on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Press and hold the left touchpad button down and then slide a finger in any direction
  • Moves an item or selects text
  • Like moving a mouse while you hold down the left button

Tap-tap-drag (Tap and a half) gesture on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Tap, immediately tap and hold, then drag
  • Moves an item or selects text
  • Like moving a mouse while you hold down the left button

Scroll gesture on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Slide two fingers horizontally or vertically
  • Scrolls though a screen or document
  • Like dragging the scroll button on the screen, or using a scroll wheel on a mouse

Zoom gesture on Surface 3 Type Cover

  • Pinch your thumb and forefinger together or move them apart
  • Zooms in or out
  • Like the gestures on your touchscreen

* On most Type Covers and keyboard, you can press anywhere except the right-click button area.

Change the touchpad settings

You can change touchpad settings to turn the touchpad on and off, reverse scrolling direction, turn gestures on and off, and more.

  1. Attach the Cover to your Surface or the keyboard to your Surface Book. (If you have a Wireless Adapter for Typing Covers, attach the Cover directly to your Surface.)
  2. Go to Start , and select Settings > Devices > Touchpad.
  3. Adjust your settings under Touchpad.
