This article describes the issue addressed by the Base Filtering Engine and Firewall services troubleshooter and the conditions that can cause it to run. For more information about troubleshooting, see Keep your device running smoothly with recommended troubleshooting.

What is the issue?

Settings for the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) or Windows Defender Firewall (MPSSvc) services may become corrupt or modified in a way that prevents the firewall from starting. If you are not using another firewall, your device may be less secure. Other components of the system that depend on the firewall may also fail, including some apps and web browsers.

What does the troubleshooter do?

The troubleshooter repairs corrupted or modified settings for the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) and Windows Defender Firewall (MPSSvc) services so the firewall can start.

When does the troubleshooter run?

This troubleshooter runs automatically on devices where these services consistently fail to start and cannot be run manually. Check Recommended troubleshooting history to see if this troubleshooter has been run on your device by going to Start  > Settings  > Update & Security  > Troubleshoot  > View history.
