If your needs change, you can switch to a different Microsoft 365 subscription. For example, you can upgrade from Microsoft 365 Personal to Family, Premium, or Pro to share benefits with others, move from Basic (100 GB) to a plan with 1 TB or 2 TB shared OneDrive cloud storage, or upgrade to Premium or Pro for access to more AI-powered features.
Note
If you purchased Microsoft 365 through a third-party provider such as Apple, Google, or a retail partner, you'll need to manage or switch subscription through that provider. To find out who manages your subscription, go to account.microsoft.com/services and select Manage.
Starting October 8, 2026, all new (including expired and repurchased) Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers get 2 TB of pooled OneDrive cloud storage, and Microsoft 365 Pro subscribers get 5 TB pooled storage. From May 2, 2027, all existing Microsoft 365 Family and Premium subscribers will get 2 TB of pooled cloud storage when the subscription renews. Pooled storage means the cloud storage allowance is shared across all members of a shared subscription. Each person's mailbox, files and folders continue to remain private. All subscription types can be extended up to 10 TB to give everyone even more OneDrive storage.

To switch to a Microsoft 365 subscription with more features, you buy another subscription and start using its benefits straight away.
Buy the Microsoft 365 subscription that you want to switch to. Make sure to use the same Microsoft account as your current subscription when you do this.
The remaining days on your current subscription will automatically convert and get added to your new subscription. The exact number of days will depend on what subscription you're moving from and what you're moving to.
Note
Depending on the subscription you're moving to, the adjusted number of days added to your new subscription may result in less time being added than the amount of time remaining on your original subscription.
How many days will be added to a Microsoft 365 subscription upgrade?
The amount of time added to your new subscription depends on the subscription type you are upgrading from and to.

Switch to a Microsoft 365 subscription with fewer features
To switch to a Microsoft 365 subscription with fewer features, you must cancel your existing subscription and then buy another subscription. You'll continue to use your old subscription until it expires.
Sign in to your Microsoft account and go to the Subscriptions tab at account.microsoft.com/services.
Find your current subscription and select Manage, and then select Cancel subscription.
The Cancel page will show you the features of your current subscription plan. If you're switching to another plan with fewer features, select the plan that works for you.
Follow the instructions to complete the switch.
Note
Your existing subscription might not change immediately, but it will automatically change to the new plan when the plan renews. You won't be charged for the new plan until it renews into that plan.
Common questions
How do I switch to Microsoft 365 Personal after my free trial ends?
We recommend that you sign in to Subscriptions with the Microsoft account associated with your subscription, select Turn off recurring billing before your trial ends, and then switch to Microsoft 365 Personal.
Can I use a new product key to switch to another subscription?
Yes, if you bought a new Microsoft 365 product key from a retailer, go to microsoft365.com/setup and sign in using the same account as your current subscription. After you enter your new product key, you'll see options for switching your plan.
Do I have to reinstall the desktop apps after switching plans?
If you're upgrading from Microsoft 365 Basic to another Microsoft 365 home subscription, yes, you'll now be able to install the desktop apps for Microsoft 365 on your Mac or PC. Get help with installing.
If you are switching between any other Microsoft 365 for home use subscription, no, you won't need to reinstall the apps after switching subscriptions.
Can I switch to a business subscription?
Yes, you can move from Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro to a business subscription. To learn how, see Switch from Microsoft 365 Personal or Family to a business subscription.
How can I switch to the discounted rate offered by my employer's Microsoft Workplace Discount Program?
If you already have Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, Premium, or Pro, you can still take advantage of this discount. When you purchase through your employer's offer, additional time is added to your existing subscription, and the discounted rate will begin at your existing subscription's annual renewal date. Be sure to specify the Microsoft account that's associated with your current Microsoft 365 subscription during the purchase process.
I don't want a subscription anymore. How can I switch to a non-subscription (one-time purchase) of Office?
Sign in to Subscriptions with the Microsoft account associated with your subscription, and then select Turn off recurring billing.
When your subscription expires, buy a one-time purchase of Office. Check prices.
When you complete your purchase, open any app like Word, Excel, or PowerPoint and switch your license to begin using Office as a one-time purchase.
