Agents in OneDrive use AI to answer questions, summarize information, and identify changes across related files and folders. OneDrive saves each agent as a file that you can reopen or share.

Important

Upgrades are coming in mid-November 2026 to agents in OneDrive. To learn more, see Upgrade agents in OneDrive.

Note

AI agents are available only for work or school accounts with Microsoft Copilot.

What is an AI agent?

An AI agent is an assistant that you create in OneDrive from selected files or folders. The agent uses Microsoft Copilot to help you:

  • Summarize updates and changes.
  • Answer questions about your documents.
  • Find important details across multiple files.

OneDrive saves agents as .agent files so you can find and reopen them later.

What you can do with agents in OneDrive

  • Create an agent from selected OneDrive files or folders.
  • Open the .agent file to ask questions about its sources.
  • Change the agent's sources, name, or instructions.
  • Share the agent with other people.

When to use an AI agent

Use an agent for tasks such as:

  • Project work: Track shared files and get status updates.
  • Onboarding: Learn about a team or process from existing documents.
  • Meeting preparation: Review files discussed in previous meetings.
  • Research: Ask questions across multiple documents and presentations.

What you need to get started

  • A work or school account with a Microsoft Copilot license.
  • Files or folders saved in OneDrive or SharePoint.

Agent creation and use with personal OneDrive content aren't available with consumption billing, such as pay-as-you-go.

Find and use an AI agent

After your organization enables agents, the option to create an agent appears in the OneDrive file list. After you create an agent:

  • OneDrive saves the agent as a file with a .agent extension and the agent icon .
  • Open the agent file to use it in a full-screen viewer.
  • Enter questions to get answers based on the sources you selected.

Good to know

  • An agent uses only the sources added to it.
  • Sharing an agent doesn't grant access to its sources. Recipients must have access to the source files to see full responses.
  • You can update an agent's sources, name, or instructions.
