There are two kinds of add-ins: Office Add-ins from the Office Store (which use web technologies like HTML, CSS and JavaScript) and add-ins made by using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Note: If your Office subscription is provided by your work or school, your organization may have limited the add-ins you can install.

Add-ins have access only to the data in the email message that you're working in. All add-ins are validated by Microsoft, including those that you install from the Office Store. For more information, see the privacy statement and the terms and conditions section in the add-in’s consent form.

Alternatively, you can install any website by going to the top corner of the browser and select Settings and more … > Apps > Install this site as an app. Once the application is installed, it will appear under edge://apps.

Important: New name for apps for Office - Office Add-ins. We are currently updating our products, documentation, samples, and other resources to reflect the platform name change from "apps for Office and SharePoint" to "Office and SharePoint Add-ins". We made this change to better distinguish the extension platform from Office apps (applications).

Install add-ins from the Office Store, which is available directly from many Microsoft 365 apps. Some add-ins must be installed by your Microsoft 365 administrator. To find an add-in in Word, select Insert > Store. Or, in the Tell me what you want to do box, type "Store". In the Store, browse through available add-ins, or search for a specific one.

Select Start , select the arrow next to All apps, right-click the app, then select More > Pin to taskbar. If the app is already open on the desktop, press and hold (or right click) the app's taskbar icon, and then select Pin to taskbar .

Note: If you see the icon next to the On/Off toggle for an app, you can select it to see the registry location that contains the path for the app. Apps installed through Microsoft Store (.MSIX apps) don’t have these icons. If you select the icon for these apps, File Explorer opens and highlights the executable file.

Add an app from the messaging area. Some apps let you insert content from the app directly into Teams messages. To add one, select Actions and apps and choose the app you want to use. You can also add apps with bot capability from the messaging area. Bots provide answers, updates, and assistance when you chat with them one-on-one or in channels.
