How to check the battery capacity of your Surface and view replacement options

How to check

Depending on your Surface device, you can use one of two tools to check the capacity: the Surface Repair Tool or the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit.

The Surface Repair Tool supports the latest Surface models. When you run it, the tool automatically checks whether your device is compatible. If your device is not supported, use the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit instead.

If the battery capacity falls below 70% of its designed capacity (battery wear level is more than 30%), you can replace it if you would like to have more battery capacity.

Run the Surface Repair Tool

  1. Select Start icon for Windows logo icon , search for Surface Repair Tool, then select it in the list of results.
If it's not installed, download it from Microsoft Store.

  2. Expand the Battery information section.

  3. Using a calculator, divide the number listed for the Full charge capacity by the number listed for the Design capacity to determine the percentage of remaining capacity.

Run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit

  1. Open the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. If it's not already installed, you can download it from the Microsoft Store.

  2. In the left pane, select Battery information to expand it.

  3. Review the following details:

    • Designed capacity: The original battery capacity when the device was new.

    • Current capacity: The maximum charge the battery can currently hold.

    • Wear level: The percentage of battery capacity lost over time.

Note

  • If you are using the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit on a work device, go to Surface Tools for IT and download the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Business. Learn more.
