Getting started with Copilot in Microsoft Edge

Copilot in Microsoft Edge can help you make decisions, research topics online, and summarize web pages, videos, or PDFs to find exactly what you're looking for.

How Copilot in Edge answers your prompts

When you send a prompt to Copilot in Microsoft Edge, we may use multiple sources of information to help answer in a way that is relevant and helpful to you. These sources include the query, recent conversation history, and your browsing context.

Microsoft Edge will determine the sources it uses to respond based on the nature of your prompt. For example:

  • For prompts that need to reference page content, (e.g., asking Copilot to summarize a webpage, video, or PDF), Edge can use information from the current webpage, page title, your open tabs, and your browser history to answer the question.
  • For prompts that don't need to reference page content, such as "Help me plan a trip to Cannon Beach," Edge doesn't use the information outside the URL, page title, your prompt, and previous conversation history to help Copilot respond effectively.

How Copilot in Edge provides suggestions

When you open Copilot in Microsoft Edge, we use the current web page information, and page title and URLs of open tabs, to suggest useful prompts to get you started.

    Note

The first time you open Copilot in Edge, Copilot informs or explicitly asks for your permission (depending on region) before using information from Microsoft Edge for the first time. Copilot then remembers this preference and use browser information as appropriate.

  4. You can ask Copilot questions about the page content in multiple ways:

  • Type a prompt. Type in and submit a prompt asking your question. Copilot will look at the page and give a response to your question.
  • Use Copilot Vision.  Press the Voice button Teams microphone icon to ask a question. Copilot Vision will look at the page and then let you have a natural conversation with Copilot about the content. Read more about Copilot Vision.
  • Ask Copilot for a summary.  Select “Create a Summary” or “Expand on this topic” in Copilot if you just want a straightforward analysis of the page content.
