How Context Clues work in Copilot in Edge

When using Copilot in Microsoft Edge, Copilot can provide a better experience by using your browsing data. Access to this browsing context is controlled by the Context Clues setting in Edge.

What are suggestions in Copilot in Edge?

Copilot can provide chat suggestions to help get you started or learn how to start conversations. When you open Copilot in Edge, Copilot uses the current page content and open tabs to craft a prompt you may find useful.

Simply select the suggestion tile to start a conversation.

If Context Clues is turned off, you see generic suggestions instead.

How is the data from browsing context used?

When you ask Copilot a question or make a request, browsing data is shared with Copilot to provide additional context. For requests such as "Help me plan a trip to Cannon Beach", Copilot analyzes the shared browsing data and incorporates the context in its response.

Copilot also uses shared browsing data to respond to requests to analyze or summarize a page, or create content like podcasts, study guides, or quizzes.

If Context Clues is turned off, Copilot doesn't have access to your browsing data and won't answer questions or perform requests based on your websites or browsing data. You can turn off Context Clues when browsing websites that may contain information you don't want to share with Copilot.

The browsing data isn't stored in your conversation history; only the prompt and Copilot's response are.

Which data is shared as browsing context?

Browsing data that can be used as browsing context includes:

  • URL
  • Page title
  • Page content or screenshots
  • Browsing history
