Reorder the chat and channels list in Microsoft Teams

Choose how you organize your chat and channel list.  Create custom sections, and reorder your chats and channels from the desktop app.

Note: Reordering the chat and channels list is part of the public preview program and might undergo further changes before being released publicly. To get access to this and other upcoming features, switch to Teams public preview.

Create custom sections

Customs sections let you place related conversations in one place so they're easier to find. Create custom sections by selecting New items>New section.  You can also move chat and channel conversations to a section by selecting More options Generic Ellipsis button

Create a new section

  1. On the left side of the app, Select Chat Teams Chat Tab icon or Teams Teams (free) Communities three people icon  to go to your list of chats and channels.

  2. Select New items.

Note: Create up to 50 sections. Each section can include up to 50 conversations.

Add a conversation to a section

  1. Go to the chat or channel name and select More options Generic Ellipsis button.

  2. Select Move to Add an app or tab button, then select the section name.

Tip: Don't see a suitable section? Select New section to create a new one and add the conversation to it.

Reorder your chats and channels

  1. Select the chat or channel that you'd like to move.

  2. Hold, then drag it anywhere in its section.

Notes:

  • Reordering channels replaces the ability to reorder teams. If you're unable to reorder your channels, you can reorder the team and move all of its channels with it.

  • You can't re-order chats and channels in a section if they're sorted by something other than "custom."

You can also reorder an entire section. To do this, hold and then drag the section anywhere on the channel list.
