Prepare to apply with Career Coach

The Career Coach app has goals you can work on with activities that grow lifelong skills. This lesson organizes the activities from the app into a series you can follow step-by-step.

In this lesson, your goal is to prepare to apply for opportunities. Complete all the activity steps to grow real-world skills and reach your goal. To focus on a specific skill, you can work on one or more of the activities.

Notes: For this lesson, you'll need:

  • A mobile device or computer

  • Microsoft Teams

  • Career Coach

  • LinkedIn

  • A journal you can customize to track what you discover and learn from the activities below (optional)

With the activities for this goal, you will: 

Learn LinkedIn skills. Identify career goals. Identify opportunities that align with your skills and goals. Learn how to write a resume and cover letter. Identify alumni who have experience that aligns with your career goals. Learn how to ask questions in an informational interview.

Get started preparing to apply for opportunities

  1. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on building your LinkedIn skills.

  2. Reflect How can you improve your LinkedIn profile using what learned from the course? Start making your improvements.

    Tip: If you're using a journal, create a list for improvements to make. Use the journal to track other ideas for the steps that follow. 

  3. Go to Career Coach. If you haven't already, complete your profile. Select Profile. Review your skills. Select Dashboard. Find any real-world experiences that you’re interested in.

  4. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on finding opportunities that are meaningful to you.  

    Note: This course has exercise files you can work on to grow your skills. 

  5. Reflect What do you want to do or learn from your next opportunity, including a job, internship, co-op, or volunteering role? How can you find opportunities that are right for you using what you learned from the course? What’s your plan for searching for them and applying?

  6. Go to LinkedIn. Select Jobs. Search by title, skill, company, or internship. Save any you’re interested in.

  7. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on how to write a resume.

    Note: This course has exercise files you can work on to grow your skills. 

  8. Reflect How would you summarize what makes a resume great, according to the course? Use what you learned from the course to improve your current resume or to create a new one. Which parts of your resume do you need to tailor when you submit applications for different opportunities?

    Tip: Use a template to enhance the format. If you need a cover letter, practice writing one. 

  9. Share Partner with a peer in person or on Teams. Exchange resumes. Give your peer feedback on: the format, objective, skills, and how you present your experience. Implement the feedback you get.

  10. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on the power of informational interviews.

  11. Reflect Who can you reach out to when you want to learn more about a company or opportunity? What are things you can do right now to build your network? What questions can you ask to learn if a job aligns with your skills and goals?

  12. Open Career Coach. Select People. Use Filters to search alumni by companies or industries that align with you goals. 

  13. Go to LinkedIn. Send three or more invites to connect with alumni from your search. 

  14. Get advice Have career services or your faculty advisor help you decide which opportunities align the most with your skills and goals. Ask how you can improve your resume and tailor it for your applications.
