Symptoms

Assume that you install a version of the Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) filter driver that is earlier than NDIS 6.20 on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. After you install the NDIS filter driver, the following power management features of the NDIS compliant miniport driver are disabled unexpectedly:

  • The Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) offload feature

  • The NS offload feature

  • The Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN) feature

The issue occurs after you install a program that uses legacy filter drivers. For example, the issue occurs after you install one of the following programs:

  • Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4

  • Third-party antivirus software

  • Third-party firewall or network routing software

  • The NDIS filter driver sample that is included in the Microsoft Windows Driver Development Kit (DDK)

Cause

This issue occurs because the legacy filter driver cannot process requests from object identifiers (OIDs) that are related to the new power management features. Therefore, the NDIS driver disables these features.
