About this subscription

  • What is "Microsoft 365 Personal 24 months free subscription"?

Since October 2025, "Microsoft 365 Personal 24 months free subscription" is included with some Office Pre-installed PCs sold in Japan only. Simply put, you can start the 24-month subscription for free. And if you have never experienced the features of Microsoft 365 Personal, instead of starting the full 24-month free subscription, you can start the 3-month free trial subscription. As the result of experiencing the features of Microsoft 365 Personal during the trial period, if you decide to extend to the full 24-month subscription, please activate an additional 21-month free subscription before the trial subscription expired. If you decide that you no longer need the Microsoft 365 Personal during the 3-month trial subscription, you can switch to Office Home and Business 2024 for free after the trial subscription expired.

  • Is there an expiration date for this 'Microsoft 365 Personal 24-month free subscription' that comes with some Office Pre-installed PCs?

Yes, if you skip the procedure to start the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription during Windows Set-up (by selecting the "No, thanks" button), and don't start this subscription within 180 days after the Windows system was activated, this subscription itself will be revoked. If that happened, you will lose your eligibility to start the 24-month free subscription. (Of course, you cannot also choose the 3-month trial subscription and all options.) Therefore, please perform the steps to start the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription (either the 24-month full or the 3-month trial) in the first run experience in Word, Excel or PowerPoint as soon as possible. If you want to know the expiration date of this subscription, please open the Microsoft store app, and check that date of the "Microsoft 365 Personal" shown under "Included with device" tab in "Library".

24 months full subscription

  • If I choose the 24 months full subscription in the first setup, do I need any payment method in my Microsoft account?

Yes, to start the full 24 months free subscription, you must turn the "Recurring Billing" switch on in the initial setup experience in Windows Set-up or Client app. Therefore, a credit card (including a debit card) or a PayPal account is required as a payment method in your Microsoft account. If you have no payment method in your Microsoft account yet, you will be prompted to add a payment method during the initial setup experience. And, when this 24-month free suscription will end, you will be billed for next 12 months subscription fee and your subscription will be extended automatically. If you want to decline the next billing, please turn off the recurring billing before the 24-month free subscription will end.

  • If I choose the 24 months full subscription in the first setup, can I switch to the 3-month trial subscription?

    No, you can't.

3 months trial subscription

  • If I choose the 3-month trial subscription in the first setup, do I need a payment method in my Microsoft account?

No, to start the 3-months trial subscription, you must switch the "Recurring billing" switch off in the initial setup experience in Windows Set-up or Client app. Therefore, no payment method is required in your Microsoft account. So, if this 3-month trial subscription will end, you will not be billed for the next period subscription fee.

Additional 21 months free subscription

  • If I activate the additional 21-month free subscription, do I need to add a payment method in my Microsoft account?

Yes, when you will order this 21-months subscription for free via the Microsoft store, the recurring billing will be enabled in your Microsoft account. Therefore, at least, one credit card (including a debit card) or one PayPal account is required to be registered in your Microsoft account. If you register no payment method in your Microsoft account at all, you will be prompted to add a payment method during the ordering process.

  • During the 3-month trial subscription, how can I activate the additional 21-month subscription?

    Please see the article.

  • After the trial subscription ends, can I activate the additional 21 months subscription?

    No, you can't.

When the trial subscription will end, you will also lose the eligibility of the additional 21-month subscription. Instead, Microsoft will grant you eligibility to order the Office Home and Business 2024 free.

  • Does the Office Home & Business 2024 free have an available expiration period?

Microsoft cloud storage (OneDrive, Outlook.com)

  • What happen to my cloud storage if the subscription is expired?

If your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription is expired, your storage allowance will revert to 5 GB of cloud storage, which includes your OneDrive and Outlook.com attachments, and 15 GB of Outlook.com storage.

If you or people you shared a subscription with have used more than the free allowances, you won't be able to upload, edit, or sync new files (such as Camera Roll) to your OneDrive, and you will not be able to send or receive email in Outlook.com.

  • What does "Microsoft Unified Storage is full" mean?

If you have files that exceed the free 5GB stored when your Microsoft 365 Personal subscription expires, this message shows in OneDrive app. This message means you have exceeded your cloud storage quota.

    • If you exceed your Microsoft storage:

      • You won't be able to upload, edit, or sync new files (such as Camera Roll) to your OneDrive. Your existing files will remain but will be read-only.
      • You will not be able to send or receive email in Outlook.com, even if you have not exceeded your email storage quota.
      • You will not be able to send or receive any Microsoft Teams messages that contain attachments.
      • After 6 months, we may delete your OneDrive and all files within it. Once deleted, these files are non-recoverable.
    • If you exceed your email storage:

      • You will not be able to send or receive email in Outlook.com.

    Note

Any emails sent to you are returned to the sender. Once you get back under your storage quota, the sender will need to resend the email.

Existing Microsoft 365 subscribers (Personal, Basic)

  • Can I start the 24-month full subscription with my MS account?

Yes, if you turn on the 'Recurring Billing' switch during the Windows setup or the initial setup of the client application, you can start the 24-month period. That 24-month subscription will be stacked on and integrated with the remaining days of your existing subscription.
(If you are an existing Microsoft 365 Basic subscriber, your subscription will be upgraded to Microsoft 365 Personal, and the remaining days on your subscription will be automatically adjusted.)

However, in Microsoft 365 subscription, the maximum subscription period that a user can extend in advance is ruled with 5 years. Please note that if there are more than 3 years remaining on your existing subscription, you cannot redeem this subscription.

Therefore, before purchasing an Office Pre-installed PC that comes with this 24-month free subscription, please be sure to check the remaining days of your existing subscription.

  • Can I start the 3-month trial subscription with my MS account?

Yes, you can start the trial subscription if you turn off the "Recurring Billing" switch during the initial setup of Windows or the client application. However, that 3-month subscription will be stacked on and integrated with the remaining days of your existing subscription, so overall it will become a regular subscription rather than a trial subscription. (If you are an existing Microsoft Basic subscriber, your subscription will be upgraded to "Microsoft 365 Personal", and the remaining days will be automatically adjusted.)

  • Can I add the 21-month subscription for free if I started the 3-month trial subscription?

Yes, you can add the 21-month subscription to your 3-month subscription if you complete to order this subscription via Microsoft store according to the steps in the article.

  • Can I get the Office Home and Business 2024 for free with my MS account if I started the 3-month trial subscription?

No, you cannot get it. This is because your subscription will be a regular subscription total more than 3 months, not a trial subscription. Your subscription will continue even if 3 months will pass, so your MS account will not meet the eligibility to get the Office Home and Business 2024 for free.

If your purpose for purchasing an Office Pre-installed PC with the "Microsoft 365 Personal 24-month free subscription" is not to get the "Microsoft 365 Personal 24-month free" but to get the "Office Home and Business 2024 free," please prepare a new Microsoft account, start the 3-month trial subscription as a new user during the initial setup, and then after the trial subscription expired, follow the steps to get the Office Home and Business 2024 free.
