Create and edit SharePoint pages with Copilot

Copilot in SharePoint helps page authors create and edit SharePoint pages with natural-language prompts. You can create pages from Copilot chat, a blank page, or a template. You can also use Copilot to update the content, layout, sections, and web parts on an existing page.

Important

Always review Copilot-generated content before publishing. You're responsible for the accuracy and appropriateness of the content.

Before you begin

To create or edit SharePoint pages with Copilot, you must:

  • Have permission to edit pages on the SharePoint site.
  • Have an active Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
  • Knowledge Agent turned on for your site.

Note

General availability of Copilot in SharePoint began rolling out on September 30, 2026. The capabilities described in this article might not be available in your organization yet. The page-authoring capabilities described in this article are included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and don't require Copilot Credits. High-volume use might be temporarily throttled. For more information, see Get started with Copilot in SharePoint.

Copilot can use:

  • Files you attach by selecting +.
  • SharePoint or OneDrive sharing links you provide.
  • Information that Copilot has permission to access, such as Teams messages, documents, calendars, email, meeting notes, and transcripts.

For the best results, attach the files you want Copilot to reference or provide sharing links. If you reference a document by name without attaching it, Copilot searches information that it has permission to access and focuses the search on documents.

Ways to create SharePoint pages with Copilot

You can create SharePoint pages with Copilot in three ways:

When a page is in edit mode, use the Copilot authoring panel to edit the current page. Copilot can't create a separate page while you're editing a page.

Create one or more pages from Copilot chat

Use Copilot chat while viewing a SharePoint site to generate one or more complete pages. One prompt can create multiple pages.

Example prompts include:

  • "Create one page for each of the three attached documents."
  • "Create a page that summarizes our documentation creation process."

To create one or more pages:

  1. Open Copilot chat from your SharePoint site.
  2. Enter a prompt that describes the page you want.
  3. Optionally, add source content by attaching a file or pasting a sharing link.
  4. Submit the prompt.

Copilot analyzes the provided content, creates each SharePoint page as a draft, and returns a link to each page in the chat. The pages remain unpublished until you publish them.

Create a page from a blank page

Use a blank page to generate content directly in a page draft and edit the content as Copilot adds it.

  1. Select New page.
  2. Select Blank page.
  3. Open the Copilot authoring panel if it isn't already open. The panel is the first content pane on the right side of the screen. To return to it, select the Copilot logo at the top of the pane.
  4. Enter a prompt such as "Create a page based on this document."
  5. Optionally, add source content by attaching a document or pasting a sharing link.
  6. Submit the prompt.

Copilot populates the current draft instead of creating a separate page.

Use a blank page when you want to:

  • Control how Copilot creates the page.
  • See content as Copilot generates it.
  • Adjust content as Copilot adds it.
  • Continue working in an existing page draft.

Create a page from a template

Templates provide a structure that Copilot can populate with your content.

  1. Select New page.
  2. Select a page template.
  3. Open the Copilot authoring panel.
  4. Enter a prompt, such as:
    • "Fill in this template based on this document."
    • "Update this template to describe what the project team achieved in March 2026."
  5. Optionally, add source content by attaching a document or providing a sharing link.
  6. Submit the prompt.

Copilot reads the source material and populates the current draft with relevant content. How much of the template Copilot retains depends on your prompt. When you ask Copilot to fill in the template, it generally retains the template structure.

Templates can help you:

  • Maintain consistent formatting.
  • Standardize page layouts.
  • Create pages faster.
  • Align pages with site design standards.

Edit an existing page with Copilot

On an existing page, use Copilot to refine and update the content. You can ask Copilot to:

  • Improve or rewrite content.
  • Update information based on one or more documents.
  • Rework the design and layout of sections and web parts.
  • Add relevant content to the page.

Example prompts include:

  • "Make sure the project information on this page is up to date as of September 2026."
  • "Update this page using the latest project document."
  • "Rewrite the introduction for an executive audience."
  • "Add all members of the project team to the contacts section, and change the background emphasis to strong."
  • "Create a two-column conclusion section at the bottom of the page. Use one column for a conclusion that summarizes the key points and the other column for links to all sources used to generate the page."

Note

Copilot supports Microsoft-provided, out-of-the-box web parts. Third-party web parts aren't supported. Copilot can edit flexible sections but can't create them. If Copilot can't complete a prompt as specified, it interprets the request within the current capabilities of the SharePoint canvas.

Use suggested prompts to edit a SharePoint page

When the page is in edit mode and the Copilot authoring panel is open, the chat displays suggested prompts. Use a suggestion to get started without writing your own prompt.

  1. Select a suggestion.
  2. Review the prompt that appears in the prompt box.
  3. Select Submit to apply it.

Review Copilot page changes with diff highlighting

When the page is in edit mode and the Copilot authoring panel is open, SharePoint highlights the areas that Copilot changes. The highlighting helps you:

  • Quickly identify modifications.
  • Review new content.
  • Validate Copilot-generated updates.
  • Decide whether to keep the changes.

Review the highlighted changes before you publish the page.

Undo changes Copilot makes to a SharePoint page

To reverse all changes that Copilot makes in response to one prompt, use Undo once or press Ctrl+Z once. You can also ask Copilot to revise its most recent changes.

Review the sources used by Copilot

Copilot might use content beyond the specific file you provide. When the page is in edit mode and the Copilot authoring panel is open, Copilot chat displays the sources used during page editing.

Reviewing sources helps you:

  • Confirm where content originated.
  • Verify accuracy.
  • Identify information that might be outdated.
  • Ensure sensitive content wasn't included unintentionally.

View SharePoint page-generation activity in Copilot

When the page is in edit mode and the Copilot authoring panel is open, expand the activity panel while Copilot is working to view:

  • Tasks being performed.
  • Content being analyzed.
  • Generation progress.

When the changes are complete, Copilot provides:

  • A summary of what changed.
  • Details about the actions performed.
  • References to the source material used.
