Error 0x80070005 in Windows Update when you try to install updates

Resolution
Error code 0x80070005 is also known as "ACCESS DENIED." It usually occurs when you lack file or registry permissions that are required to install the update. (Because file or registry permissions may be changed by malware, we recommend that you scan for malware after you repair the permissions.)

To resolve the issue, make sure that you are logged on as an administrator, and then install the updates again. If the problem continues, use the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Download the SubInACL tool, and install it to the default path that is offered by the installer. The default path will be one of the following, depending on your version of Windows: 
    • %ProgramFiles%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools (32-bit versions of Windows)
    • %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Windows Resource Kits\Tools (64-bit versions of Windows)
  2. Start Notepad, and then copy and paste the following commands:

  3. Save the file as Reset.cmd.
  4. Right-click the Reset.cmd file in File Explorer (in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8) or Windows Explorer (in Windows 7 and Windows Vista), and then click Run as administrator. In Windows XP, double-click the file in Windows Explorer.
  5. Wait until the execution finishes, and then try to install the update again.

Windows 8.1 and Windows 8

To log on as an administrator, follow these steps.

Note The steps that you should follow will vary, depending on whether your computer is a member of a domain or is in a workgroup. To determine whether your computer is a member of a domain or is in a workgroup, see "To check if your computer is in a workgroup or domain" in What is the difference between a domain, a workgroup, and a homegroup?
My computer is a member of a domain
  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search. Or, if you are using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  2. Type User Accounts in the search box, and then tap or click User Accounts.

  3. Click Manage User Accounts. An administrator password or confirmation iconIf you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  4. Your user name is highlighted, and your account type is shown in the Group column.

My computer is in a workgroup

If your account type is Administrator, you are currently logged on as an administrator.
If your account type is not Administrator, you cannot log on as an administrator unless you know the user name and password for another account on the computer that is an administrator. If you are not an administrator, you can ask an administrator to change your account type.

Windows XP

To log on as an administrator, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

  3. All user accounts are listed on the User Accounts page, and each account has some status (such as Computer administrator, Limited account, and so on).

  4. Make sure that you are logged on to an account that has the Computer administrator status. If your account status is not Computer administrator, you cannot log on as an administrator unless you know the user name and password for another account on the computer that is an administrator. If you are not an administrator, you can ask an administrator to change your account type.
Scan for malware

Windows 8.1 and Windows 8

Run Windows Defender to scan for malware. If malware is preventing Defender from functioning correctly, download and run Microsoft Safety Scanner. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Go to Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  2. Click Download Now.
  3. If you are prompted, click Run.
  4. Follow the instructions to download and install Safety Scanner. When you are prompted, add a shortcut to Safety Scanner to your desktop.
  5. From your desktop, double-click the Safety Scanner icon. When the program starts, click Scan Type, click Full Scan, and then click Next.
  6. After the scan is complete, remove all detected malware entries.

Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

Open your antivirus software, and run a scan to detect and remove any malware. If you don't have antivirus software on your computer, you can use Microsoft Safety Scanner. To download and run Microsoft Safety Scanner, follow these steps:
  1. Go to Microsoft Safety Scanner.
  2. Click Download Now.
  3. If you are prompted, click Run.
  4. Follow the instructions to download and install Safety Scanner. When you are prompted, add a shortcut to Safety Scanner to your desktop.
  5. From your desktop, double-click the Safety Scanner icon. When Safety Scanner starts, click Scan Type, click Full Scan, and then click Next.
  6. After the scan is complete, remove all detected malware entries.
