For agents
What are agents in SharePoint?
Agents in SharePoint support you and your team with your workflows, projects, content discovery and knowledge sharing, based on the content in SharePoint sites, pages, and selected files. All SharePoint sites and document libraries come with a ready-made agent. With edit permissions to the site, you can create custom agents to get more specific answers tailored to your specific purpose.
Where can I use agents created in SharePoint?
You can access an agent from a SharePoint site, page, or document library. You can also use it in Teams if added. We plan to make it available across Microsoft 365, including Microsoft Copilot.
Are agents available to SharePoint Online Classic sites?
The user experience for creating and using agents is available on SharePoint Online Modern sites. However, when creating an agent from a Modern site, you can select any SharePoint site as a knowledge source.
Without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, can I use agents?
If you are assigned a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, or your organization has the Pay-As-You-Go billing set up, you can use agents in SharePoint.
What's the limit of number of sources I can include for the knowledge source of an agent?
Currently, you can include up to 20 source items as the knowledge source of an agent. These source items can be sites, document libraries, folders and files. If you have the need for more than 20 source items, you can nest the data at a higher level and source the agent to that level. For example, you can include any of the following:
- 20 files
- 20 sites
- 20 folders
- 10 files + 10 sites
- 4 folders + 16 files
When using agents, what information do I have access to?
When you use an agent, you have access to sites, pages and documents that are included in the agent's sources and to which you already have permissions, as well as Microsoft Graph data on recent file interactions and profile information. If you don't have permission to specific content, even if this content is included in the agent's sources, you will not see information from this content in your chat with the agent.
What files are supported by agents?
Currently, the following file types are supported:
- Office documents: DOC, DOCX, PPT, PPTX, XLSX
- New Microsoft 365 formats: FLUID, LOOP
- Universal formats: PDF, TXT, RTF
- Web files: ASPX, HTM, HTML
- OpenDocument formats: ODT, ODP
Support for the following file formats is coming soon:
- Images
- Meeting recordings and other videos
- OneNote notebooks
Note
Agents currently don't use data from Lists. Also, you can't add pages from the Site Pages library as source for an agent.

When I choose a hub site as a knowledge source for the agent, will it be able to search and give response about all sites associated with the hub site?
Ready-made agents automatically include both the current site and any associated hub sites as knowledge sources.
Starting September 2025, when you choose a hub site as a knowledge source for a custom agent, the associated sites of the hub site are automatically included. For custom agents created before September 2025, edit the agent to remove the hub site and reselect it. Saving this update will include the associated sites of the hub site to the agent.
What is the difference between an agent in SharePoint and an agent made with Microsoft Copilot Studio?
Agents in SharePoint allow site editors to quickly define an agent tailored to their specific team or projects directly within SharePoint. In comparison, creating an agent in Copilot Studio enables you to use content from SharePoint or OneDrive as sources, as well as other sources. We are working on integrating with Microsoft Copilot Studio to customize your agent with data sources beyond SharePoint.
