Import data from another Excel file with Copilot in Excel

Applies To
Excel for Microsoft 365 Excel for Microsoft 365 for Mac

Sometimes you might need to import data from one Excel workbook into another. With Copilot in Excel, you can use Power Query to import the data directly and create a refreshable connection.

How to import data from another Excel file

  1. Open Excel.

  2. To open Copilot, select the Copilot icon in the lower-right corner of Excel, or select Home > Copilot on the ribbon.

  3. In the Copilot pane, ask Copilot to find the data that you need. You can copy and paste one of the example prompts, or type something in your own words.

    Note

You can currently only import data from Excel files with tables—we're working on providing more options. Import is currently only available for Excel for Windows or Mac. We plan to make it available for Excel for the web soon as well.

  4. If there are multiple results, review them and select the one you want to use. You can choose Show tables to import to see the data that Copilot found.

  5. When you see the data you want, select Import to a new sheet. Copilot inserts the table in your workbook.

  6. Refresh the table any time you need to get the most updated data.

Note

If you get an authentication dialog, select Organizational Account and sign in.
