Add a Learning Activity to an assignment

Applies To: Microsoft Teams for Education, LMS solutions that work with Microsoft 365

Add a Learning Activity to an assignment so students can practice with flashcards, matching, fill in the blanks, and other interactive activities alongside their coursework. Learning Activities are not graded — they're designed for practice and self-paced learning. This works in Teams Assignments and in any LMS that uses Microsoft 365.

Attach an existing Learning Activity

If you already created a Learning Activity, you can attach it to an assignment:

  1. In Teams, navigate to your class team and select Assignments. In your LMS, open the assignment creation flow through Microsoft 365 LTI.
  2. Select Create > New Assignment.
  3. Enter the assignment title, instructions, and any other details.
  4. Select + in the resource area, and then select Learning Activities. Screenshot of learning activities navigation.
  5. In the Activity Picker, browse or search your existing Learning Activities by title. Screenshot of attaching a learning activity.
  6. Select the activity you want and select Attach.
  7. The activity appears as a card in your assignment. You can still add other resources (files, links) alongside it.
  8. Select Assign when you're ready.

Attach multiple Learning Activities

You can add more than one Learning Activity to a single assignment. Repeat the attach steps for each activity you want to include.

Create a new Learning Activity during assignment creation

Don't have an activity ready? You can create one without leaving the assignment flow:

  1. In the assignment creation form, select + and then select Learning Activities.
  2. In the Activity Picker, select Create new.
  3. Choose the activity type (flashcards, matching, fill in the blanks, or other available types).
  4. Build your activity and save it.
  5. The new activity is automatically attached to your assignment.

What happens when you copy an assignment

When you copy an assignment that has a Learning Activity attached, the system creates a new copy of the activity for the target class. The copy is independent — changes to one don't affect the other.

If you publish to multiple classes at once, a separate copy is created for each class. The class name is added to the activity title so you can tell them apart.

Remove a Learning Activity

To remove a Learning Activity from an assignment before publishing:

  1. Find the activity card in the assignment body.
  2. Select the X or Remove option on the card.

The activity is removed from the assignment but still exists in your Learning Activities.

Things to keep in mind

  • Learning Activities aren't graded and don't affect the assignment score, rubric, or gradebook.
  • Attached activities are read-only in the assignment. To edit the activity content, open it from your Learning Activities library.
  • Copy behavior is the same in Classwork. See Add a Learning Activity to a Classwork module.
  • If an attachment fails due to a class association error, try again or contact your IT admin.
