How to get updates

Surface updates are released in stages—not every Surface will receive updates at the same time, but they'll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t previously received updates, you can manually update by following the steps at Download drivers and firmware for Surface. 

You can quickly check the health of your Surface drivers and firmware using the Surface app.

1. In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.
2. If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates. 

If you don't have the Surface app installed, you can download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store. After the download is complete, select Start and enter Surface in Search. Then, select the   app from the list of results

February 18 release

The following update is available for Surface Pro (11th Edition) running Windows 11, Version 24H2 or greater.

  • Strengthen your device’s security. We’ve addressed potential security vulnerabilities that may lead to unexpected shutdowns and privilege escalation.  

• Reliability:

  • Be productive when using a virtual private network (VPN). We've resolved an issue where devices have no cellular network connectivity when using a VPN.
  • Ensure you have the correct connectivity settings. We’ve fixed an issue where your cellular setting changes to SIM card, overriding your previous eSIM selection. 
  • Lead seamless video conference calls. We’ve resolved an issue that causes unexpected shutdowns during Microsoft Teams calls. 
  • Get full functionality when your device is docked. We’ve addressed compatibility issues with Surface Dock 2.

  • Restores the Battery Limit option to the Surface Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) settings, allowing customers to turn the setting on or off. When the Battery Limit option is turned on, the battery stops charging when it reaches 50% of maximum charge capacity.

  • Addresses a security vulnerability that may allow an unprivileged user space application to execute a sequence of instructions due to improper validation of authorization.

  • Addresses an issue where the camera app may freeze or hang during video recording.
  • Improves camera stability when using its IR capabilities.
  • Resolves an issue where the keyboard became unresponsive after resuming from hibernation.
  • Improves system stability and display experience by reducing Timeout Detection and Recovery (TDR) events, which led to the system becoming unresponsive or crashing.

• Performance and usability:

  • Addresses an issue where T-Mobile SIMs on certain Surface devices lose service and fail to reconnect without a reboot or manual intervention.

  • Resolves an issue in Surface Type Cover blade accessory that caused connection loss or prevented successful pairing.
  • Addresses an issue that prevented the Surface Pro Slim Pen 2 from connecting to the system.

  • Improves system stability and reduces the frequency of unexpected shutdown or occurrence of black screen while watching Netflix.
  • Mitigates the issue that could cause screen flashing or a blank display during power state transitions.
  • Improves the touch experience by resolving an issue where touch functionality could be lost after the device remained in Sleep mode for an extended period.
  • Addresses an issue with Slim Pen losing haptic or Side button functionality in Microsoft OneNote.
  • Resolved an issue where the battery icon incorrectly displayed the device as plugged in after waking from Sleep mode, even when it was not connected to a power source. 

• Performance and usability:

  • Resolves the issue that caused authentication failures while using Windows Hello when waking from Sleep mode.
  • Improves camera stability by reducing unexpected crashes and addressing issues including freezing in video calls when HDR is enabled, errors when launching the Camera app or taking photos, and problems switching between front and rear cameras in some apps.

• Reliability:

  • Supports stability improvements to Surface USB4 Dock for Business, ensuring that devices can boot successfully using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE).
  • Improves Surface USB4 Dock for Business's overall connectivity and functionality of devices when docked, ensuring better compatibility and performance with various docking stations.
  • Improves system stability by reducing crash and bluescreen occurrences coming out of a sleep session and fixing the issue where devices may crash while watching Netflix.

  • Enhances AI-driven experiences through the integration of a new Neural Processing Unit (NPU) driver.

• Resolves an issue because of which the Wake On LAN (WOL) feature does not function correctly when using Surface Dock 2 or Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock via USB-C while the device is in the Hibernate or Shutdown state. 
• Addresses an issue where the Network BitLocker unlock feature fails when using a Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock during a cold boot. 
• Fixes an issue that was preventing the devices to successfully boot from the network using PXE when connected to a  Surface Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock and set as the first boot option in the UEFI. 
• Resolves the issue of screen flashing when the OLED display is exposed to direct sunlight.

  • Get seamless touchscreen functionality. We’ve resolved an issue where finger touches on the screen aren’t accurate, and we’ve addressed issues with the touchscreen not responding after the device is idle or wakes from sleep.
