How to get updates

Surface updates are released in stages—not every Surface will receive updates at the same time, but they'll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t previously received updates, you can manually update by following the steps at Download drivers and firmware for Surface. 

You can quickly check the health of your Surface drivers and firmware using the Surface app.

1. In the Surface app, expand Help & support to check the update status.
2. If there are updates available, select the Check for updates button to open Windows Update and install the available updates. 

If you don't have the Surface app installed, you can download the Surface app from the Microsoft Store. After the download is complete, select Start and enter Surface in Search. Then, select the   app from the list of results

July 30 release

The following update is available for Surface Pro 12th Edition with Snapdragon running Windows 11, Version 26H1.

Improvements and fixes:

• Reliability:
  • Get optimal display quality. We’ve resolved an issue where the screen shows a distorted image after power transitions such as restarting or waking from sleep.
  • Enjoy more consistent device cooling. We’ve fixed an issue where the fan speed and noise drop and rise unexpectedly.
  • Get accurate battery charging information. We’ve fixed an issue where the battery charging icon incorrectly shows that the device is charging after you disconnect a USB-C charger.
  • Make sure your battery charges to your desired level. We’ve resolved an issue where the battery stops charging when the device is asleep.
  • Expand your capabilities with monitors, docks, and other USB-C devices. We’ve resolved an issue where USB-C data, display, or charging devices aren’t recognized after initial startup.
  • Maintain your productivity. We’ve fixed an issue where external monitors don’t restore functionality after the device wakes from sleep.

June 16 release

The following update is available for Surface Pro 12th Edition with Snapdragon running Windows 11, Version 26H1.

Improvements and fixes:

• Reliability:

  • Enjoy smooth video playback. We’ve resolved an issue where the screen shows a green bar when you try to play video.
  • Complete your tasks without delays. We’ve fixed an issue where the screen stops responding for one to five seconds before recovering.
  • Gain improved external monitor detection and connectivity. We’ve addressed an issue where the device doesn’t detect one of the monitors in a dual display without the need to manually switch display modes.
  • Get better audio recovery after your device comes out of hibernation. We’ve reduced the chance of internal speakers losing audio after device hibernation.
  • Use your touchscreen without the device registering palm touches. We’ve reduced unintended touch input when you rest your palm on the touchscreen.

• Performance and usability:

  • Get improved storage reliability and performance. We’ve addressed issues to reduce errors with internal storage and improve performance.
  • Enjoy fast performance in video conference calls. We’ve fixed an issue where Microsoft Teams performance is slow.

• Reliability:

  • Complete your tasks without delays. We’ve addressed an issue where devices connected to an external monitor get stuck on a logo screen when restarting or coming out of hibernation.
  • Be productive when you need to. We’ve fixed an issue where the device shuts down unexpectedly after waking from sleep.
  • Enjoy your favorite videos without disruptions. We’ve fixed an issue where Dolby Vision videos show an error message that says Dolby Vision isn’t authorized on the device.
  • Get the latest system updates. We’ve resolved an issue where Surface System Aggregator firmware isn’t updated after you install a new MSI package.

• Performance and usability:

  • [For 5G devices] Ensure your device’s OLED display doesn’t feel hot during heavy use. We’ve improved thermal control data to create a more comfortable user experience.

The following update is available for Surface Pro for Business 12th Edition with Intel running Windows 11, Version 24H2 or greater.

Improvements and fixes:

• Reliability:

  • Get stable cellular network connectivity. We’ve resolved an issue where devices can’t connect to a cellular network because they display incorrect radio frequency bands. We’ve also fixed an issue where the device loses connectivity while idle or when waking from sleep.
  • Enjoy your videos without disruptions. We’ve fixed a noise issue that occurs when you remove a dock from the device while playing video.
  • Avoid interruptions when your device wakes from sleep. We’ve fixed an issue where external monitors connected via Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock or Surface USB4 Dock show no display after the device resumes from the screen turning off or sleep.
  • Set up your device quickly using the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE). We’ve resolved an issue where the device stays on a logo screen for an extended time and may show a black screen during the setup process when a LAN cable isn’t connected.

• Performance and usability:

  • Ensure your device’s OLED display doesn’t feel hot during heavy use. We’ve improved thermal control data to create a more comfortable user experience.
  • Maximize your battery life. We’ve fixed an audio processing issue that increases power consumption.

  • Get enhanced control for regulatory compliance. We’ve improved motion-sensor tuning related to radio frequency regulations.

• Performance and usability:

  • Easily customize your keyboard behavior for improved flexibility. Choose the actions you want the Copilot and top-row keys to perform. Your preferences will be stored in the Surface app and applied consistently across different scenarios.
