Build your LinkedIn presence with Career Coach

The Career Coach app has goals you can work on with activities that grow lifelong skills. This lesson organizes the activities from the app into a series you can follow step-by-step.

In this lesson, your goal is to build your LinkedIn presence. Complete all the activity steps to reach your goal. To focus on a specific skill, you can work on one or more of the activities.

Notes: For this lesson, you'll need:

  • A mobile device or computer

  • Microsoft Teams

  • Career Coach

  • LinkedIn

  • A journal you can customize to track what you discover and learn from the activities below (optional)

With the activities for this goal, you will: 

Learn LinkedIn skills. Learn how to improve your LinkedIn profile. Identify your skills. Identify alumni who share your skills and interests. Learn how to share your story on LinkedIn. Build your network on LinkedIn.

Get started building your LinkedIn presence

  1. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on how to use LinkedIn.

  2. Reflect What are three way you can improve your LinkedIn profile using what you learned from the course? Make the additions or changes. If you don't have an account, create one using three things you learned from the course. 

    Tip: If you're using a journal, list the changes you want to make or things to include in your profile. Use the journal to track other ideas for the steps that follow. 

  3. Open Career Coach. Select Profile. Select Skills Explorer. Upload your resume or transcript. Review your skills on the Profile page under My skills. You can delete any you don’t want in your  profile.

  4. Go to LinkedIn. Add your skills.

  5. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning course on how to create an outstanding LinkedIn profile

  6. Reflect What story are you sharing about your skills and experiences in your profile summary? What could you add or remove to improve your story? 

  7. Share Partner with a peer in person or on Teams. Invite each other to connect on LinkedIn. Review profile summaries. Use what you learned from the course to give your peer two ideas to enhance their summary. Implement the feedback you get.

  8. Open Career Coach. Select Profile. Choose Connect my LinkedIn account. Next, select People. Review alumni profiles. Choose two alumni who have skills and experiences that interest you.   

  9. Go to LinkedIn. Send the alumni invites to connect. Add or update any of the following in your profile to continue developing your story: photo, industry and location, education, headline, background image, keywords, and experience

  10. Get advice Have career services or a faculty advisor review your LinkedIn profile. Ask for ideas to make improvements and how you can continue to build your presence.
