Prepare to interview with Career Coach

The Career Coach app has goals you can work on with activities that grow lifelong skills. This lesson organizes the activities from the app into a series you can follow step-by-step.

In this lesson, your goal is to prepare to interview. Complete all the activity steps to grow real-world skills and reach your goal. To focus on a specific skill, you can work on one or more of the activities.

Notes: For this lesson, you'll need:

  • A mobile device or computer

  • Microsoft Teams

  • Career Coach

  • LinkedIn

  • A journal you can customize to track what you discover and learn from the activities below (optional)

With the activities for this goal, you will: 

Learn skills for interviewing in person and online. Identify jobs. Identify alumni and send invitations to connect on LinkedIn. Learn common interview questions. Learn what to do after an interview. Learn how to negotiate salary. 

Get started preparing to interview

  1. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning courses on how to be an appealing job candidate and how to attract the attention of recruiters on LinkedIn.

  2. Reflect How can you present yourself in an approachable and authentic way? What can you add or change to improve your LinkedIn profile using what you learned from the courses? How can you use what you learned from the courses when you interview?

    Tip: If you’re using a journal, list your ideas for skills from the courses you want to develop for interviewing. Use the journal to track other ideas for the steps that follow. 

  3. Go to LinkedIn. Select Jobs. Search by companies that interest you. Save jobs you want to apply to.

  4. Open Career Coach. If you haven’t already, complete your profile. Select Profile. Review your skills to make sure they’re current. Select People. Use Filters to search alumni by companies you found on LinkedIn. Invite three alumni from your search to connect on LinkedIn.

  5. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning courses on preparing for an interview and interviewing online.

  6. Reflect What company information would be helpful to you to gauge if the company culture is a good fit and to prepare to answer questions effectively? What skills from the courses do you need to develop to enhance your interviewing skills? How can you start developing these skills?

  7. Share Partner with a peer in person or on Teams. Practice interviewing each other using common interview questions.Give your peer feedback on their strengths and opportunities for improvement.

  8. Learn Watch the LinkedIn Learning courses on following up after an interview and negotiating salary.

  9. Reflect How can you convey you are professional and respectful when you follow up and when you negotiate an offer? What do you find most challenging about following up and negotiations? How can you use what you learned from the courses to build your skills?

  10. Share Partner with a peer in person or on Teams. Practice stating your skills, experiences, and achievements in a brief way that conveys the value they offer.Give your peer feedback on the strength and professionalism of their summary. Let them know what they can improve using what you learned from the courses. Use the feedback you get to prepare for following up and negotiating offers.

  11. Get advice Ask career services or your faculty advisor for best practices to prepare for interviews. Ask if there are any opportunities on campus to grow these skills. Use a checklist to prepare and follow up for your interviews.
