Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app changes for some users
Last updated: February 2026
The Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app is rolling out changes for both Microsoft 365 subscribers and non-subscribers. These updates affect how you access and edit your files and how you create new Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on mobile.
As the app moves to an AI-first experience, some capabilities such as browsing your full list of files and editing Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files inside the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app will be discontinued. Instead, you’ll be redirected to open or install dedicated Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneDrive mobile apps for those tasks. How you create new files in the Microsoft 365 mobile app is also changing for Microsoft 365 subscribers and non-subscribers.
The file browsing, creation, and editing functionality that exists in the mobile app today will still be available for both non-subscribers and subscribers, just through different access points.
See the following sections for how the changes will affect non-subscribers and those with an active Microsoft 365 subscription.
Changes for Microsoft 365 non-subscribers
When you try to open a file in the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app, you’ll be redirected to the appropriate app (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint) where you can access and edit the file. Sign in to that app with the Microsoft account that has access to the file.
How to access files, create and edit Word, Excel, PowerPoint files
To create a new Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, you’ll need to use the dedicated Word, Excel, and PowerPoint mobile apps.
You can browse your most recent files in the Search tab, however, to browse and manage your full list of files, you’ll be redirected to the OneDrive mobile app.
If you don’t have Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneDrive currently installed, you can find them in your app store, available for both iOS and Android.
Changes for Microsoft 365 subscribers
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, when opening the mobile app, you’ll land on the Chat home screen where you can start a voice or text chat to ask Copilot questions, summarize content, brainstorm new ideas, and create documents and visual content. This includes personal subscriptions and eligible work or school subscriptions where Copilot is available to your organization.
How to access, create, and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files
You can browse your most recent files or search for files in the Search tab of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. To browse and manage your full list of files, you’ll be redirected to the OneDrive mobile app.
When opening a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file in the Microsoft 365 Copilot mobile app, you can preview the file and use Copilot Chat to ask questions about the files directly in the previewer. To edit that document, you will be redirected to the appropriate Word, Excel, or PowerPoint mobile app.Â
To create a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, use the Chat tab to prompt Copilot to create a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, describing the file you want to create. Copilot will create a download link for the file. Select the link and you will be redirected to the appropriate mobile app to open and edit the file.
If you don’t have Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or OneDrive currently installed, you can find them in your app store, available for both iOS and Android.
