Multitenant organizations connect various tenants and subsidiaries as a single group to allow cross-tenant collaboration and engagement. In Viva Engage, tenants are organized in a hub-and-spoke organizational model: leadership resides in the hub, and subsidiaries reside in the spokes. When Viva Engage is configured for multitenant organization, communities can take collaboration a step further by providing private spaces for members across tenants to connect and share knowledge.

Note: A Viva Suite license is required for each Viva Engage user on both the hub tenant and spoke tenants to enable the multitenant community experience. Unlicensed users will encounter restricted access.

Enabling cross-tenant engagement in a community

Any established community on the hub tenant (except All Company) can be enabled for cross-tenant engagement. Communities aren't automatically multitenant aware but must be manually enabled by the Engage administrator. Contact your Engage administrator to enable this feature for your community.

User experience for spoke tenants

A multitenant-enabled community is available to everyone on the spoke tenants as a private community. Both spoke and hub tenant users can request to join the multitenant-enabled community. Membership is contingent on approval by the community administrator.

Community members on spoke tenants engage the same way as on other communities, with a few exceptions.

Features that are unavailable on spoke tenants:

  • Email notifications for new posts and bell notifications for reactions, replies

  • Ability to favorite the multitenant community

  • Praise and poll post types

  • Search

  • Mobile support on iOS and Android

Adding members

The community administrator can add members from other tenants using their preferred methods (in Microsoft 365 groups, within the Viva Engage community, or with a CSV file).

In a multitenant aware community, the Member panel (accessed from the Member tile on the community home page) shows the home tenant for each spoke tenant user next to their name.

Adding community admins

Community admins can add more community admins to their multitenant-enabled community. However, admins must reside on the hub tenant.
