Basic tasks using a screen reader with Yammer

Note: This topic applies to classic Yammer only. For more information on using this feature in new Yammer, see Use a screen reader to explore and navigate new Yammer.

This article is for people with visual impairments who use a screen reader program with the Office products and is part of the Office Accessibility content set. For more general help, see Office Support home.

Use Yammer with your keyboard and a screen reader to do all essential basic tasks, such as sign in and follow groups and discussions. We have tested it with Narrator, but it might work with other screen readers as long as they follow common accessibility standards and techniques.


  • New Microsoft 365 features are released gradually to Microsoft 365 subscribers, so your app might not have these features yet. To learn how you can get new features faster, join the Office Insider program.

  • When you use Yammer, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge as your web browser. Because Yammer runs in your web browser, the keyboard shortcuts are different from those in the desktop program. For example, you’ll use Ctrl+F6 instead of F6 for jumping in and out of the commands. Also, common shortcuts like F1 (Help) and Ctrl+O (Open) apply to the web browser – not Yammer.

Sign in to Yammer

You can sign in to Yammer using either of the following ways:

After sign-in, you land on your personalized Yammer home page, which lists all discussions in all groups that you follow.

Sign in through the Office portal

To sign in via the Office portal, you must be signed in to your Office account.

  1. Go to

  2. Sign in, if necessary.

  3. Press the Tab key until you hear “Yammer,” and then press Enter.

Sign in through

  1. Go to

  2. Press the Tab key until you hear “Log in,” and then press Enter.

  3. Type your email address, and then press the Tab key.

    Tip: If your organization has a special log-in screen, type in your email address, press the Tab key, and then follow the on-screen instructions to sign in.

  4. Type your Yammer password and press Enter.

Join and follow groups

When you join a group, you can follow that group’s conversations and activities.

  1. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear “My groups," and then press Enter.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • To display a personalized selection of available groups, press the Tab key until you hear “Recommended to you,” and then press Enter.

    • To display all available groups, press the Tab key until you hear “All groups,” and then press Enter.

  3. To browse through the groups, press the Tab key. Your screen reader announces the names and descriptions of the groups.

  4. When you hear a group you want to join and follow, press the Tab key once. You hear: "Join." Press Enter. You hear a notification that you've joined the group.

Tip: You can also use Search to look for a specific group. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear "Search," and then type the search words. Press the Down arrow key to move down the search results list until you hear the group you want, and then press Enter. Press the Tab key until you hear "Join group," and press Enter.

Subscribe to groups

When you're on a group’s feed, you can subscribe to that group and receive an email whenever someone starts a new discussion thread.

  1. Press Ctrl+F6 until you hear: “Unchecked, Subscribe to this group by email.”

  2. Press Spacebar to subscribe to this group.

    Tip: You can unsubscribe to a group at any point. If you leave the group, your subscription is subsequently removed, too.

Follow discussions

When you follow a single discussion, you receive an email whenever someone posts to that discussion.

  1. On the Yammer page of a group, press the Tab key until you hear “More discussion options,” and then press Spacebar.

  2. You hear: “Follow in Inbox.” Press Enter to select.
