What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires

If your Microsoft 365 subscription has expired

When your Microsoft 365 subscription expires, your account (and anyone you shared your subscription with) reverts to a free account, you don't lose any data, but you will lose most of the subscription's premium functionality.

Office apps

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc. remain installed.

  • You can still open and view existing documents.
  • You can usually print files.
  • The apps enter Reduced Functionality Mode, which means you can't create new documents, edit existing ones, or save changes until the subscription is renewed.
  • Use the free Office on the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in a browser with a Microsoft account.

OneDrive

Your files remain in OneDrive, but your storage quota reverts to the free amount of 5 GB.

Important

If your storage usage exceeds the free 5 GB quota, you may lose the ability to upload new files and syncing can be affected until you either reduce your storage usage, or renew the subscription.

  • You can't upload, edit, or sync new files, such as Camera Roll. Your existing files remain but are read-only.
  • After three months: If you remain over your OneDrive storage limit, your OneDrive account is frozen.
  • After six months: Microsoft might delete your OneDrive and all files within it. Once deleted, these files are non-recoverable.

Outlook.com

Your email account remains active.

Important

If your storage usage exceeds the free 5 GB quota, you can't send or receive email if you exceed either your cloud storage quota or mailbox storage quota. Incoming emails are returned to the sender and must be resent after you free up space or renew the subscription.

Subscription sharing

Anyone you've shared a Microsoft 365 Family, Premium or Pro subscription with remains in your Microsoft Family group, but all shared Microsoft 365 benefits stop, and their account reverts to a free account. Specifically, they lose:

  • Access to the fully functional desktop Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

  • Their additional 1 TB OneDrive storage allocation.

  • Other subscription-based benefits associated with the Family plan.

  • Their files remain intact, but the Office apps revert to view/print-only mode until a subscription is restored.

Find out when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires

Here's how to check when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account Subscriptions at account.microsoft.com/services.

    Sign in

  2. Review the details under the Services & subscriptions heading.

    • If you see a circle arrow, then your subscription is set up for recurring billing, unless you turn recurring billing off or cancel it beforehand. The next charge info shows you when you'll be charged next, and for how much.
    • If you see Expires on [date], then your subscription will expire on that date, unless you renew.
