When enabled by your administrator, the Record Spanish option in the DAX Copilot for Epic Haiku and Canto mobile applications enables you to capture clinician-patient conversations in Spanish or a combination of English and Spanish while providing care during a patient encounter.

Note: This feature requires Epic Haiku version 11.3.3 (or newer) or Epic Canto version 11.3.2 (or newer), but no Epic SU is required.

How to record in English or Spanish

Record in English or Spanish DAX Copilot lets you create multiple recordings for an encounter. The AI uses all recordings for an encounter to generate the summaries that appear in the SmartSections in your note.

English is the default recording language at the beginning of each encounter. You must enable Record Spanish if any portion of a recorded conversation will occur in Spanish.

To record in Spanish:

1. Launch the DAX Copilot activity in Haiku or Canto.

2. Select the gear icon on the DAX Copilot screen.

3. Toggle the English/Español switch to on.

Note: The EN/ES symbol beside the gear icon indicates that Spanish recording is on.

4. Select the recording button to begin recording.

5. Select the recording button again to stop recording.

Important: Spanish recording mode will remain ON until you turn it off - or you start another patient encounter.

6. To return to English recording mode, select the gear icon again and toggle English/Español off.

Review the SmartSection summaries in your note

AI-generated summaries appear in your note if it includes DAX Copilot SmartSections. Summaries from Spanish recordings are generated in English. Always review and edit summaries for accuracy before signing.

Review the transcript (and more) in DAX Copilot

The transcript of any Spanish recordings will appear in the language(s) spoken during the encounter. The transcript is diarized, meaning each speaker's portion will display in the spoken language of English or Spanish.

Note: The DAX Copilot activity in Epic shows the combined transcript of all encounter recordings and other features. Launch DAX Copilot from the Actions menu  next to any DAX Copilot SmartSection in the Notes activity in Epic.

Additional details and best practices

  • Set the toggle switch to “ON” in Haiku or Canto before recording to capture Spanish or English-Spanish conversations. If not enabled, Spanish words will appear as phonetic spellings in an English transcript.

  • You cannot change the recording language within a single recording. To switch languages, stop and start a new recording for the same encounter.

    • For example: If the first recording is in Spanish and a later one in English (e.g., for lab results), the transcript will show each language separately. DAX Copilot combines both and generates the clinical summary in English.

  • The generated note summaries for the encounter will always appear in English.

  • Audio recordings for an encounter are not available in the DAX Copilot activity and are deleted after 30 days.

Important notes

  • The Record Spanish feature is available to all DAX Copilot customers, but access depends on your organization’s configuration. Contact your Epic administrator to enable this feature.

  • Spanish recording mode in DAX Copilot is not a translation service. When enabled, it transcribes English and Spanish interchangeably, but accuracy may drop if speakers mix languages or talk over each other. In such cases, clinicians should restate or summarize in one language during the encounter or in a separate recording afterward.

  • Specialty AI models in DAX Copilot do not support Spanish recordings. If any part of an encounter is in Spanish, the General AI model will generate the clinical summary from the combined transcript. Clinical research teams are working to add Spanish support soon.

  • SmartSections display AI-generated summaries of recorded conversations in English or Spanish. Clinicians must verify the accuracy of these summaries and follow their organization’s responsible AI policy for attribution.

  • Use the AI Feedback feature in the Note section in DAX Copilot, or the Actions SmartSection menu to share your experience as we will continue to develop this feature.
