Async events give people a way to ask questions and get answers at different times, which keeps the conversation visible, searchable, and accessible over time. Use async events to conduct an event without a Teams online experience. They're best suited for an in-person event or a text-only discussion like an ask-me-anything (AMA). Users can find async events across Engage storyline and communities, which makes them flexible for both leader‑led moments and group‑based discussions.

Hosting an async event

Async events are suitable for cases where open Q&A, transparency, and durability matter more than real‑time presentation.

Common use cases for async events include:

  • In‑person event – Use the async event as the event page to share details and communicate with attendees

  • Leadership Q&A – Executives or managers answering employee questions about strategy, priorities, or changes

  • Change communications – Reorganizations, policy updates, or new initiatives

  • Expert sessions – Subject‑matter experts responding to questions over time

Because async events are text‑based and persistent, they support async participation across time zones and schedules.

Where you create async events

Async events can be created and hosted in two locations in Viva Engage: storylines and communities.

Storylines

Because they're hosted on an Engage storyline, an async event is typically leader‑centric. Storyline async events work well for the following event requirements:

  • Executive or leadership Q&A

  • Organization‑wide topics

  • Broad visibility across the network

Storyline async events are discoverable through the leader’s storyline and can be shared broadly across Viva Engage.

Communities

When an Engage Community hosts an async event, it's anchored to a specific group. Async events are ideal for the following uses:

  • Team‑specific or function‑specific discussions

  • Topic‑based or interest‑based Q&A

  • Ongoing conversations within a defined group

Community async events stay in the context of the community and support structured Q&A.

Best practices for effective async events

  • Set context early: Clearly explain the topic, scope, and expectations

  • Encourage upvoting: Helps surface the most important questions

  • Address tough questions: Transparency builds trust

  • Mark best answers: Makes resolved questions easy to find

  • Leave the event open: Allow time for async participation and follow‑up

Async event analytics

Async events offer a simpler set of analytics to evaluate how effective your event was. These are the analytics shown for async events.
