Viva Engage public content has been available as a grounding source for Microsoft 365 Copilot since May 2025. Now, as of June 2026, Viva Engage private content is also generally available as groundng source for Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences. By referencing conversational knowledge from across your organization, this integration enables Copilot to provide richer, more contextual responses.
Additionally, as users search in Enterprise Search surfaces like office.com, sharepoint.com or Copilot Search, they will get results from Microsoft Viva Engage that they have access to. The results show up as interleaved results on the search page. Copilot license is required to use Copilot Search.

- Posts from public communities, private communities and Answers, Events and Storylines

Only content that users have permission to view is eligible for grounding.
How it works
Microsoft 365 Copilot experiences including Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Search can use Viva Engage content as a grounding source for AI-driven responses. Copilot Chat (free version) doesn’t support this capability.
Enterprise Search results will show matching content from Engage posts.
Licensing requirements
✅ The Microsoft 365 Copilot license is required for users to access Microsoft 365 Copilot and Copilot Search, but not required for Enterprise Search.
❌ Viva Engage licenses are not required for users to access Copilot responses that are grounded in Engage content, nor are they required to see Engage results in Enterprise Search or Copilot Search.
Access & permissions
Copilot only grounds responses in Viva Engage content that the user has permission to access.
Users can search only for content they are authorized to view in Enterprise Search and Copilot Search. This helps maintain compliance with your organization’s data security policies.
Viva Engage citations and search results also show the community’s sensitivity label when one is applied.
Sensitivity level notifications appear both in Mcrosoft 365 Copilot search results and chat.
