What is a template?

A template lets you tailor AI-generated content in Dragon Copilot. Templates can include formatting, instructions, and other customizations to help create more consistent documentation aligned with your style and workflow. You can find templates for specific note sections, or whole notes and other documents, such as referral letters.

Note

The features and functionality available to you might vary based on your organization's configuration, language settings, and platform (web, mobile, or desktop).

Why use templates?

Templates help streamline documentation and tailor AI-generated content to your preferred style, specialty, and workflow. When you use templates,

  • Your documentation is more consistent. Every note and document follows your preferred structure, headings, and phrasing.

  • Your documentation is streamlined. Default templates generate automatically when your note is created, so your note is generated to your preferred style automatically, and routine documents are ready as soon as you are.

  • Your output is personalized. When you tailor templates to your specialty, and your own documentation style and workflow, your notes look and feel the way you want them every time.

  • You spend less time editing. Templates let you capture your format and style once so you can reuse it every time you document, instead of reformatting after each encounter.

Important

Before you use a template, review the note generated by Dragon Copilot with your primary specialty selected. If the note meets your needs, continue using the default experience. If you need additional personalization, apply the default note section template and review the results. If you need additional changes, use the AI assistant to edit the default template or create a new template.

As with all Dragon Copilot AI features, templates are built on a responsible AI framework, ensuring a foundation of trust. Templates are built with four key components.

Template components

A template includes four key elements:

  • Labels and headers: Fixed text that appears in the note exactly as written. Don't use brackets. Use quotation marks for canned text.

    • Example: GENERAL APPEARANCE:
    • Canned text example: "Risks and benefits have been discussed with the patient."
  • Placeholders: Sections the AI fills in with information extracted from the note and transcript. Use [square brackets].

    • Example: Treatment: [Briefly describe treatments.]
  • Instructions: Guidance for how the AI updates content. Often phrased as if/then statements, placed near the relevant content. Use {curly brackets}.

    • Example: {If none specified, delete this row.}
  • Looping commands: Instructions to repeat content for multiple items. Use {curly brackets}.

    • Example: {Repeat for each diagnosis}

The following example shows a sample Assessment and Plan template. Select each tab to explore how labels and headers, placeholders, instructions, and looping commands are used.

{Repeat for each diagnosis}

[Diagnosis] {Do not number the diagnoses}

  • Monitoring: [Briefly describe symptoms, signs, or testing to follow as evidence of disease progression or disease regression.] {If none specified, delete this entire row and its header.}
  • Evaluation: [Briefly describe any analysis and interpretation regarding the patient's condition to determine how well the current treatment plan is working and to identify any necessary adjustments. This description could include reviewing medical test results or describing the patient's response to treatment.] {If none specified, delete this entire row and its header.}
  • Assessment: [Briefly describe any clinical judgments and decisions based on the evaluation to address the patient's needs by planning and implementing appropriate interventions. This description could include ordering new tests or procedures, discussing the patient's treatment options, or reviewing previous treatments.] {If none specified, delete this entire row and its header.}
  • Treatment: [Briefly describe any related treatments like lifestyle counseling, medications, or referrals. Don't include the name or location of the pharmacy.] {If none specified, delete this entire row and its header.}

Note section templates

Note section templates enable you to customize AI-generated content for specific sections of a note. You can use the default template for each section, modify it, or create your own templates.

Where can I use a note section template?

  • Use note section templates across Dragon Copilot on web, desktop, and mobile.

  • A template applies to a particular section of the Dragon Copilot note. Note section templates are available for the following sections:

    • History of Present Illness
    • Allergies
    • Physical Exam
    • Results
    • Procedure
    • Assessment and Plan

Each supported section includes a default template that you can use, modify, or replace with your own.

Important

Templates use generative AI and might not behave as expected in every scenario. Always review generated content and make any necessary edits.
